Beginner Recorder Lessons
The lessons below are each 20-30 mins long. They aim to teach children (in approximately year 3) the basics of learning the recorder. They also begin to deal with the concept of pitch and duration notation, improvisation and composition.
In order for the children to make good progress, I recommend a 5 minute practice session each day in addition to the video lesson for that week. It is unlikely that the children will progress sufficiently if they are not given adequate time to practice in between video lessons.

A lot of the material in these lessons comes from Razzamajazz Recorder Book 1 by Sarah Watts. If you purchase a copy of this book, then you will be able to access backing tracks for practice purposes
There is a powerpoint below which includes some of the slides used in the video lessons.

Lesson No. 9 is a composition lesson. I use a score-writing software called Noteflight. If the children would like to have a go on Noteflight, you can access it here: Noteflight - Online Music Notation Software (a logon is needed)
If you would like some other pieces to play along with, have a look at these fantastic play-along videos, which feature recorder playing with other instruments: Recorder Lift Off - Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra (tso.com.au)
This lesson is about composing and notating an 8 bar melody. It is not necessary to compose using notation and the children could follow the instructions and compose their own melodies by ear and perform them from memory if that works better for your class.

This video is just an introduction to get the class thinking about how they could create a really effective performance of everything they have learnt this term.
