Shirley Screech - Saxophone

Picture
Received initial music tuition through the Cornwall Music Service (recorder, violin and clarinet) and went on to study Music at degree level, with Wilfred Goddard and then briefly John Davies.

I have been teaching and playing in the South West since 1988. Alongside instrumental teaching and coaching ensembles, I have also been a classroom music teacher (GCSE and A Level, as well as Years 5 and 6).

My musical tastes are wide! From 1940’s-50’s big bands, to jazz and swing, ‘unpopular’ contemporary music and classical / orchestral music. My initial inspiration for saxophone came from Stan Getz (his album with Oscar Peterson) and Clarence Clements (particulary his solo on Jungleland by Bruce Springsteen!) and the bands Loose Tubes and Delightful Precipice.

I’m a Radio 3 and 4 nut and an ECM records fan. Some of my favourite sax/clarinet players are Stan Getz, Benny Goodman, Lester Young, Iain Ballamy, Geoff Simkins, Art Pepper and Illinois Jacquet. Favourite contemporary jazz groups include: Farmers Market, Magnetic North Orchestra, Jan Gunnar Hoff and Nick Bartsch.

Other than playing and listening to music, I enjoy walking up in the mountains in Norway, reading anything, being outdoors and have recently begun a course in furniture upholstery.
